Phoney Baloney’s

I have to say, that we are very lucky in Orange County to have so many excellent vegan options. We’ve got Native Foods, Veggie Grill, FreeSoulCaffe, Wheel of Life, Seabirds Truck, and now our own little sandwich shop called Phoney Baloney’s. Even the name is fun.

Cali BBQ It is a little hard to find and in kind of an odd location. It’s in a gym in Irvine. I was a little skeptical when I walked in, but the staff were so friendly and inviting. We got three sandwiches to go; the Cali BBQ, the Buffalo Chicken, and the OG Grilled Cheese. Even my non-vegan father-in-law like the food.

It’s freshly prepared to order. The menu is small, but has a wide range of sandwiches, salads, and smoothies What’s a little different is how reasonably priced it is. Sandwiches are between $5 – $6. That’s hard to beat anywhere, but the food is also outstanding.

They do have a small eating area, but you may opt to take it to go unless you enjoy eating in a gym and watching people work out. However, this may be a great way to introduce the general public to the tastiness of vegan fare.

Give it a try if you are in the area.

Update: November 2012

Unfortunately Phoney Baloney’s is closing on November 17. Due to the odd location and tight margins, they weren’t able to make a go of it right now. I hope to see them pop up again in the future because these are great vegan sandwiches and the owner, Kyle Domer, is an awesome guy. I’m sure we’ll be seeing good things from him in the future.
